Submissions
Want to write for us? Here are our guidelines.
The National Interest seeks original ideas and analyses on topics of U.S. foreign and national security policy as well as international politics, economics, security, and diplomacy, particularly from a realist perspective that emphasizes U.S. national interests as well as the national interests of other states. This includes topics at the intersection of foreign and domestic policy that shape America’s role in the world, such as energy, technology, trade and finance.
Due to possible copyright and legal restrictions, all articles submitted must be exclusive to TNI. No article should be submitted simultaneously to TNI and another publication.
We are happy to consider manuscripts for the following types of articles:
- Online Features: Articles between 800 and 2,000 words in length. Please embed hyperlinks to point to sources. Do not submit manuscripts with source notes or footnotes.
- Blogs (The Buzz, Techland, Energy World, Silk Road Rivalries, Korea Watch): Posts between 600 and 1,000 words in length.
You may submit such works by email, as Google Docs, .doc or .docx files. Please direct submissions to: [email protected].
Your email should include the following:
- A subject line that clearly indicates it is a submission and the article type, e.g. “Submission: [Name of Blog] Article about [Insert topic here]”
- An author biography that highlights your expertise in the topic you have written about. It should be 50 to 100 words.
- A high-resolution professional headshot in .jpeg format
- Links to any personal social media accounts you’d like us to include in your author profile
Please give the staff five business days from the time of submission in which to evaluate manuscripts or proposals.
Due to the high volume of manuscript submissions, and in keeping with our editorial practice of reading all submissions (that meet our criteria), we can acknowledge only articles we are interested in publishing. If you do not receive such confirmation after the requisite period, you are free to take your manuscript to another publication for placement.
We will reject articles incorporating plagiarized material, including self-plagiarized text, as well as those produced using generative artificial intelligence or similar tools.
